Against abortion.

Why abortion is equal to infanticide and therefore evil.

Introduction

The goal of this article is to show how I arrive at the conclusion that abortion constitutes infanticide rather than healthcare. I strongly believe that if people who are not opposed to abortion thought abortion was in fact infanticide, they would be opposed to abortion. Similiarly, if I believed that abortion was healthcare and not infanticide, I would obviously support this healthcare for women. Let us focus on the real issue in this abortion debate: Does abortion constitute infanticide or is it simply the administering of righteous healthcare?

I want to make it explicitly clear that my goal is not to push guilt on anyone, nor is it to show that certain people are evil in my view. I believe that the most important thing we can do is to discuss and conclude the morality of abortion so that we can put an end to it. I would never blame a stressed out, hormonal woman for agreeing to an abortion under the duress and recommendation of supposedly trustworthy healthcare "experts".

Glossary

To defend my arguments from (un)intentional misinterpretation, here is a small glossary of terms that I may use and exactly what I mean when I use these.

Term Description
Fetus A preborn human being; a baby before it is born
Infant A young human child
Abortion The intentional termination of a fetus
Infanticide The killing (-cide) of an infant (infanti-)

The argument against abortion

A fetus is an infant; therefore killing a fetus is equivalent to killing an infant; therefore abortion is equal to infanticide.

One of the main arguments for abortion is that a fetus is not an infant up until a certain point in time. Different pro abortion crowds determine this point in time differently, such as whenever a heartbeat can be detected with whatever the latest medical technology we have; an arbitrary amount of weeks the mother has to be pregnant; some up until the actual birth.

This means that anyone who makes such an argument is asserting that there is some point in the development of a fetus in which the fetus turns into an infant, or a human life, where it was not that before this point in time. The issue with this argument is that if you ask ten people who hold to this argument about which point in time they are referring to, you will receive ten different answers. I would claim that this is an illogical point that does not square up with reality.

I would say that the difference between me at ten years old and me at twenty years old is found in the degree of maturation or development. I was me, a human being, at ten years old as much as I was a human being at twenty years old. I don't see how anyone could come to the conclusion that I received my humanity based on some event during the time of my development. The development of a human being starts at the moment of conception, before that moment no human being was being developed, this development starts after that moment. Since that development is a continual process that starts at conception and ends at biological death, I would assert that the essence of humanity is also spawned at conception and ends at biological death.

As such, I believe that I have fully logically shown that a fetus is an infant has his/her humanity from the moment of conception. If this is the case, then terminating a fetus is completely equal to terminating an infant, a toddler, a teen, etc. Therefore showing that abortion constitutes infanticide and must therefore be completely banned in any society that claims that it is just and respects the dignity of human life, regardless of the circumstances of the pregnancy.
